Hi Readers! I am glad that you could join us on this, our last club meeting for October. This week, my fellow bloggers and I are doing our Reading Challenge. This month, I chose something from the Super Tricky list.
Super Tricky
Read a book that taught you about a subject you are unfamiliar with.
Read a book with a on the run or road trip theme.
Trifecta Books (sounds, cover and title must all …be cute/sexy /etc).
Read a book with an “unconventional” heroine.
Name that Tune
Read a book with an "unconventional" heroine
The Hidden Legacy Trilogy
I am doing something a little different for this month's reading challenge. It is not always easy to find something that fits a challenge, especially the trickier ones. But I did happen to find one that fit the "unconventional heroine" category. I signed up to review a book for a touring company I review for. It was the second book (WHITE HOT) in the Hidden Legacy series by husband and wife team Ilona Andrews. It's an urban fiction crossed with paranormal romance,IMO. Luckily, I already had the first book in the series (BURN FOR ME) and squeezed that one in before the review and I was hooked. Then book three came out this year too (WILDFIRE) and I knew who would be my choice for the heroine.
I don't normally read books written in first person, but the stories and characters were that good. The hero, Conor Rogan is a billionaire who is dark, and dangerous. And sometimes hilariously funny. He is totally flummoxed by the heroine, Nevada Baylor who he kidnaps because he needs her help.
The story is set in modern Houston, Texas, but the world is full of magic. Those with the strongest powers created "houses" of power and wealth.
Nevada isn't from wealth, she is a young woman struggling to keep her late father's private detective business afloat to provide for her family. The family members have their powers as well and Nevada has powers as well as the gift of telling when someone is not telling the truth. This one she doesn't divulge to just anyone.
There is so much to like about Nevada, and she is kick-ass! She is smart, brave, and loyal. She is the foundation of the family and their moral compass. I love that she is respectful of her family's talents and listens not only to her ex-military mom and grandmother (who drives a tank!), but to her teen siblings and cousin as well.
Throughout the trilogy, her bravery and intelligence is something to admire. Together, she and Rogan become a pair to be reckoned with when dealing with secrets of the magical houses. Both Nevada and Rogan are so magnetized by each other and it's fun to watch their relationship change and grow. The spicy tension between them was hot and both characters were complex and well developed.
I don't read a lot of urban fantasy, but this trilogy was Five Star to me. I know that the authors have been asked to continue, but they are concentrating on a longer running series right now. I know that I hope they listen to their new fans and come back to this exciting series!
