Sinful pleasure and forbidden desire rule in #1 bestselling author Lora Leigh's story For Maggie's Sake, previously published in the anthologies Real Men Do It Better and Taken, now exclusively in e.
Maggie Chavez is in protective custody with a member of her former lover's SEAL team. Joe, her ex-lover, thinks Maggie is hiding information from him about a powerful drug lord and the deaths of some SEALs. He intends to seduce her and get the information before she can sell it back to the drug cartel. But the desire crackles between them and their attraction is undeniable. How can Joe use her and leave her, when all he wants is to hold her close and never let go?
Happy Release Day! I selected and reviewed FOR MAGGIE'S SAKE recently for my online book club, Book Club Thursday, which I blog with my BFF's.
The hero in the story, Joe Merino, is a DEA agent. His best friend and fellow agent is dead and the friend's wife has been brought in for questioning for any knowledge of her husband's involvement with a drug cartel. Maggie's husband implicated that she was involved with some unsavory doings. Worse yet, she is Joe's ex-lover.
FOR MAGGIE'S SAKE is a fast-paced and intense novella. Joe has his doubts that Maggie was involved and nobody questioning her is making a breakthrough. It's decided that he will take Maggie to a safe house and maybe Joe will get through to her. He has the best shot of wearing Maggie down even if he has to use their former relationship to do it.
The cartel story isn't the important thing here. This is also a second-chance story. Deep down Joe knows that Maggie is innocent. The relationship between the two characters is the focus and what went wrong with it two and a half years ago. Communicating in bed was never their problem, they sizzled between the sheets. It was communicating in the real world that broke them up. Enter a manipulative and resentful friend bent on betrayal, blindsiding Joe and using Maggie to do it. As they spend more time together, they put the pieces together on their break-up and if they can mend what was broken, if they survive against the cartel. The scenes in the bedroom prove that there is still a spark, make that an inferno, that mega-talented author Lora Leigh writes so well.
When I started reading the story, I didn't realize that it was a novella previously released in 2007 in an anthology, REAL MEN DO IT BETTER. That was nine years ago and the story still holds up nearly a decade later. FOR MAGGIE'S SAKE is being released in e-book December 13th. It has been repackaged with a sexy new cover for new readers to discover and enjoy. Fans of steamy romantic suspense will enjoy this one.
