Scottish Werebears: An Unexpected Affair
Author Lorelei Moone
E-book Published September 25, 2015

When romance novelist, Clarice Adler, hides herself away in a secluded holiday cottage to finish a book, the last thing she needs is another relationship. Imagine her surprise when she falls head over heels for the man who runs the place. Derek McMillan knows Clarice is his mate, but he’s a bear shifter and she’s human and the two simply don’t mix. They are literally worlds apart; can they find a way to come together?

I love shifter stories and this one takes place on an island off of Scotland, so it yelled "read me!" It's the first in a series of novellas. It's a sweet read. Claire is doubting herself after a bad break up with a cheating ex, and she has let it interfere with her writing career. Worried about her career, she rents a small cottage for two weeks, hoping to clear her writer's block. She meets her landlord, a good-looking quiet and rugged man. When she assumes he is married, he doesn't bother to correct her.
Derek is a bear shifter. Bears are more loners than other weres. His inner bear recognizes his mate, but Derek tries to stay clear of her because she is human and thinks that nothing can come from a short relationship. He might avoid her, but he that doesn't stop him from leaving gifts like freshly caught salmon and a recipe at her door.
This is a short story and he avoids her for nearly the first half, but when Claire is hurt in a storm, his protective bear side takes over and gets her to safety. Claire has a dream about being protected by a bear, but when she wakes up, Derek the man is sleeping after keeping watch over her. Not long after that, a bear knocks into the door of the room and Derek changes right before her eyes.
The story picks up from there quickly. I can't tell you much more except that there is a legend of human hunters that kill bears and it might not be just a legend. Claire and Derek fall for each other and they have a sexy chemistry once Derek opens up.
The author, Lorelei Moone is from London and this is the first novella in a series. American authors usually write a Scotsman with a brogue, but Ms. Moone did not, which was different. The story was good and Claire and Derek fall for each other quickly, but its a paranormal novella so it didn't bother me. What did bother me...dun dun dun, was the rather abrupt cliffhanger ending. I didn't see that one coming. I did think I might read the next story in the future if its priced fairly.
