Book Club Thursday: Clearing Off The Shelves

Hi Readers! Welcome back to this weeks Book Club Thursday. This week we will be CLEARING OFF THE SHELVES.
I am glad that you joined us for this first BCT blog of the New Year. My fellow bloggers and I are huge bookworms. We even worked together in a book store for years.  I am sure that a lot of you readers have that little quirk that only voracious readers have--we buy more books than we can ever read! Not the worst problem in the world, but as the books pile up, the shelf space goes down, so as one of our monthly features, we each are going to make space and read one of our books with a publishing date that is at least six months or older.
We have changed some of our format here at BCT. I hope you will like the changes. One of our features is Clearing Off The Shelves and selecting a book which meets a certain criteria. We have made it easier to check out BCT with our Tabs above.

My choice for this month is a HARDCOVER.
THE SHADOWS by J R Ward.

Published March 31, 2015

Two brothers bound by more than blood fight to change a brutal destiny in the heart-wrenching new novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood by #1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward.

Trez “Latimer” doesn’t really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could function in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S’Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped the Territory and has been a pimp and an enforcer in Caldwell, NY for years- all the while on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He’s never had anyone he could totally rely on... except for his brother, iAm.

iAm’s sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing- and he knows he’s failed. It’s not until the Chosen Serena enters Trez’s life that the male begins to turn things around... but by then it’s too late. The pledge to mate the Queen’s daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating.

Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others- or forever leave behind the female he’s in love with. But then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Staring out over an emotional abyss, Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice...

Thoughts On My Clearing The Shelves Pick

I love the Black Dagger Brotherhood stories and I always look forward to reading them. Now that they are hardcover, the length can be a little intimidating and life intrudes a little bit. It took me about two weeks to read.
In ways, it reminded me of the earlier books. We got to see more of some of the original characters. Rhage, aka "Hollywood" and one of my faves was back and provided some of the more humorous moments in the story. He also proved to be a good friend. V, Doctor Jane, Mary, and Manny make appearances, too.
This story also delved back into the history of the Shadows and their society. You learn a lot more about twin brothers Trez and iAm. Trez also finds his true love, but he is betrothed to another.
I am not going to give any spoilers to Trez and Serena's tale. You, the fans must make that journey yourself. It seems that fans either loved or hated it. Ward herself posted something a little controversial about the story-line. I didn't want to read that until after I finished because I didn't want to color my opinion.
The story itself is an emotional roller coaster. There are times of laughter and times that might have you reaching for the tissues. It also shows you that your family doesn't have to be just by blood. Some of the story is setting up for the spin-off series of new young Dagger trainees. All in all, the story may leaves you with some questions and should provide some good conversations with your friends that have read it.

I give The Shadows 4 out of 5 stars myself.

Thank you for joining us here this week. I hope that you will share your thoughts with us each week. We love hearing from you. Don't forget to stop by my friends' blogs and enjoy their Clearing Off The Shelves pick. Stop by next week, January 14th, when we are having a Free Day.
