Women rarely refuse the wicked Earl of Hepplewood, whose sensual skills are the stuff of legend. But when his new governess answers his proposition with a slap to his face, then stalks out with references in hand, Hepplewood finds more than his face is left burning . . .

Isabella Aldridge has brains, bravado, and beauty-but the latter is no use to a servant. With orphaned sisters to feed, eviction nearing, and Hepplewood’s words ringing in her ears, Isabella realizes she must barter her most marketable asset . . .

But when fate unknowingly sends Isabella back into Hepplewood’s arms, the earl must make an impossible choice-draw Isabella down into his sensual darkness, or behave with honor for the first time in his life.

My Review:

This is my first book by Liz Carlyle so I didn't know what she would write like. I've been a little burned out by historicals lately, a roguish hero and the impoverished heroine, but this sounded different so I thought I would try it out. The cover was eye-catching as well. It did surprise me.
Isabella is a widow with little money who is also trying to take care of her younger sisters, and Anthony, the Earl of Hepplewood does not hire her to be the governess to his young daughter (as she was led to believe) and sends her off instead. Neither one can forget each other, and through some unusual circumstances, they meet again.
You have to read the book for more, but I must say if you like gentler love scenes, then this novel is not for you. I wasn't expecting the spicy and sexy love scenes so early in the story.
I did enjoy the story and the main characters though it was a little slow at times. There are some nasty relatives that Isabella must deal with, but her love changes Tony and together they meet the many challenges in their unusual relationship. I would definitely read another story by Liz Carlyle.

I received this ARC through Edelweis from the publisher for an honest review.

    1. Other reviews I read said that this was somewhat different for her. It did have tiny print so it took longer to read than I would have liked.

    1. It was, wasn't it? Historicals have such beautiful covers.

  3. I can't tell from the reviews what caused the Earl to not hire Isabella and send her away. And now I'm very curious as to how they meet again. Obviously, something will happen between them and I would enjoy finding the answers to these questions I have. I've liked Liz's other stories and I realize from the many reviews I've read about this one that it is different. But I like different. Mainly, I like romance and historical romance at that. When an unusual plot happens across my Kindle, I'm happy. :-) Thanks for the post. jdh2690@gmail.com

    1. I have never read her books before. I would read her again. The problem with review writing is the balance of not giving away too much information and keeping it interesting for readers. Thanks for your input, Janice.
